A court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced a man to death for repeatedly stabbing his wife and attempting to murder his six-year-old daughter. The incident occurred two years ago.

On June 9, 2022, Sanjeet Dash, aged 46, stabbed his wife Saraswati, a head nurse, 33 times at their residence in Bhubaneswar's Ghatikia area. He also slit his daughter's throat, although she survived. The attack reportedly occurred just days after the birth of their second daughter, leading to Dash's immediate arrest.

While pronouncing the judgment, the Second Additional Sessions Judge, Bhubaneswar, categorised the crime as 'rarest of rare' and awarded the death sentence to Dash. The court said that the severe penalty would deter others from committing similarly heinous acts and noted the profound trauma endured by the surviving daughter.

The judgment has been forwarded to the District Legal Services Authority for considering compensation for Dash's minor daughters.
