In a move to enhance the cultural resonance of Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu has renamed two of its prominent halls. The ‘Durbar Hall’ will now be known as ‘Ganatantra Mandap’, and ‘Ashok Hall’ will be renamed ‘Ashok Mandap’.

The renaming is part of ongoing efforts to make Rashtrapati Bhavan more accessible and reflective of Indian cultural values. The term ‘Durbar’ historically referred to the courts and assemblies of Indian rulers and British officials. With India's transition to a republic, the term became less relevant. ‘Ganatantra’, meaning ‘republic’, better captures the essence of the venue’s role in modern India. Thus, ‘Ganatantra Mandap’ will now symbolize the democratic values of the nation.

‘Ashok Hall’ was originally a ballroom. The term ‘Ashok’ is derived from Emperor Ashoka, known for his emphasis on unity and peaceful coexistence, and also refers to the Ashoka tree, which holds significant religious and cultural value in India. The renaming to ‘Ashok Mandap’ aligns with the intention to move away from anglicized terms and honor the profound cultural and historical meanings associated with 'Ashok'.

These changes aim to celebrate and honor India's rich heritage while ensuring the names of these important spaces are in harmony with the nation's values and traditions.
