The Supreme Court is poised to function at its full strength with the elevation of Justices N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan.

The apex court, which has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges including the chief justice, was functioning with only 32 judges. The Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, is expected to administer the oath to the two new justices on Thursday.

This elevation will mark a historic moment as Justice N Kotiswar Singh, the current Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, becomes the first judge from Manipur to be appointed to the Supreme Court. His appointment is seen as a significant representation for the North-East, according to the SC Collegium.

Justice Mahadevan, currently acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, will also add to the diversity of the bench. The Collegium noted that his appointment will provide representation to the backward community from Tamil Nadu.

The Supreme Court will operate with a full bench of 34 judges until September 1, 2024, when Justice Hima Kohli retires, followed by CJI Chandrachud on November 10 this year.

With these elevations, both regional and community diversities are being highlighted as a strength for the nation's highest judicial body.
