Golam Dastagir Gazi, Bangladesh's former textile and jute minister, has been detained in Dhaka as part of a crackdown on officials from the ousted Awami League government, media sources reported on Sunday.
The 76-year-old politician was arrested late Saturday night in the Piergoli area, according to The Daily Star. Officer-in-charge Mollah Mohammad Khalid Hussain reported that Gazi was taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office by Dhaka Metropolitan Police due to recent violence damages at the local station, with a crowd besieging the location upon learning of the arrest.
While specific details about his arrest are yet to be disclosed, Gazi faces a murder case alongside other prominent figures. The upheaval follows Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and flight to India, leaving many leaders of the Awami League either imprisoned or in hiding after the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed power on August 8.
