In a compelling call to action, Supreme Court judge Justice K V Viswanathan on Friday underscored climate change as a serious existential threat, advocating for the establishment of a permanent commission in India akin to NITI Aayog to devise a comprehensive solution.
Echoing this urgency, another SC judge, Justice Surya Kant, highlighted the court's proactive stance. He emphasized that the apex court has frequently transcended existing laws to combat environmental degradation. Justice Viswanathan launched the book 'Climate Change: The Policy, Law and Practice,' authored by lawyer Jatinder (Jay) Cheema, to rally support for this critical issue.
Justice Viswanathan noted the ongoing debate among experts about the structure of climate change legislation. He suggested a regulatory framework that balances development with emission control. Justice Kant stressed the Supreme Court's recognition of the need to balance infrastructure development with environmental preservation. He urged the Indian legislature to enact measures that defend the environment while facilitating economic growth.
