White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed profound concern on Wednesday regarding reports of rape, torture, and abuse against Palestinian detainees in Israeli detention facilities. Speaking at a press briefing, Jean-Pierre underscored that the United States has consistently communicated to Israel the imperative of humane treatment for all detainees.

'The reports of rape, torture, and abuse are deeply concerning. We have been clear and consistent with Israel that it must treat all detainees humanely and with dignity, in line with international law, and must ensure accountability for any abuses or violations,' she asserted. Jean-Pierre highlighted that the US has emphasized the need for Israel to uphold international law, respect human rights, and ensure accountability for any misconduct. She mentioned ongoing discussions regarding an investigation by the Israeli Defence Forces into alleged abuses by Israeli soldiers.

'We support an IDF investigation into allegations of serious abuse of Palestinian detainees by IDF soldiers. It is essential that the rule of law and due process prevail,' Jean-Pierre added. She reiterated the importance of lawful conduct and due process.

Commenting on the broader situation in the Middle East, Jean-Pierre noted substantial progress in diplomatic efforts, saying, 'Our focus will continue on diplomatic conversations with Middle Eastern leaders to achieve de-escalation and address tensions in the region, including finalizing a ceasefire and hostage release deal.' She emphasized President Joe Biden's commitment to de-escalation, noting, 'We want to see a de-escalation in tension.' The president and his team remain dedicated to resolving these issues.
