Junior doctors have officially ended their hunger strike, which aimed to address concerns stemming from the RG Kar incident. The decision came late Monday after intense discussions with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In addition to withdrawing the hunger strike, the doctors also called off a planned shutdown of the state's health sector. The medics had been fasting since October 5, seeking justice for a colleague who was tragically raped and murdered in August.
While the chief minister met several of their demands, she stopped short of removing the state health secretary. Both parties agreed on the existence of a 'threat culture' in hospitals, albeit with differing views on its causes. The medics' strike had followed a near 50-day cease work effort.
