A 22-year-old resident of Bhiwandi in the Thane district allegedly set his father-in-law's house on fire after being denied money for liquor, according to local police on Tuesday.

The suspect, Ahmed Dilawar Khan, reportedly asked his wife and her family for Rs 1,000 to buy alcohol. When they refused, Khan became irate and allegedly doused the house with petrol at around 5 a.m., setting it ablaze. The residence was completely gutted in the incident.

Khan had been arrested just a day prior for possession of a weapon but was granted bail by a local court. Following the house fire, police have now filed criminal charges against Khan and launched a search to apprehend him.
