The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken a stern stance against food adulteration during the festive season. Food safety commissioners in all states and Union Territories have been instructed to enhance their vigilance on the manufacturing and sales of sweets and dairy products.
According to a letter issued by the FSSAI, the demand for items like sweets, savouries, milk, and milk products such as ghee, khoya, and paneer surges during festivals. This rise in demand often leads to economic motives for adulteration.
To counteract this, the FSSAI recommends special surveillance and enforcement actions, especially in areas notorious for these practices. Regular checks by Food Safety Officers are deemed crucial to assure product safety. Additionally, mobile units like Food Safety on Wheels will be deployed in key markets to ensure compliance with food safety standards.
