Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced on Sunday that new crest gates for the Tungabhadra reservoir will be installed within a year.
Speaking at a public event held at Munirabad Government Primary School after performing the traditional 'Baagina' thanksgiving ceremony at Tungabhadra reservoir, Shivakumar stated that the installation would involve consulting with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Tungabhadra Board. The new gates will employ the latest technology to safeguard farmers' interests. The dam, which is 71 years old, faced a setback on August 10 when its crest gate number 19 was swept away.
Engineering expert N Kannaiah Naidu played a vital role in helping Karnataka save over 20 TMC of water by erecting a new crest gate, thereby securing crops on nine lakh acres, according to Shivakumar.
Regarding the Navali balancing reservoir, the Deputy CM mentioned that a Detailed Project Report has been prepared and approximately 15,000 acres of land are required for the project. He plans to meet soon with the chief ministers and irrigation ministers of neighboring states to discuss further action.
