The Indian government is set to digitize the agriculture sector by registering farmers nationwide to issue Aadhaar-like unique IDs. Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi made the announcement during the Outlook Agri-Tech Summit and Swaraj Awards, outlining the initiative as a component of the Rs 2,817-crore Digital Agriculture Mission approved by the Cabinet.
The government aims to register five crore farmers by March next year. A pilot project has already been conducted in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and 19 states have come on board. This new registry will simplify access to various agricultural schemes and streamline governmental policy planning.
Chaturvedi emphasized the importance of this initiative in reducing the verification burden for farmers applying for schemes like the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and Kisan Credit Card. Progressive farmers, scientists, and companies are encouraged to spread awareness about the registration process. Camps will be organized nationwide to drive participation. Additionally, technological advancements such as a Kisan AI-based chatbox system are also being developed to enhance support for farmers.
