DGCA, IndiGo Achieve Milestone with Successful RNP-AR Validation Flight at Kathmandu Airport

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and IndiGo completed a successful validation flight using the RNP AR approach at Kathmandu Airport. This marked a significant step in enhancing safety and operational efficiency in complex airport environments, involving an all-women inspection team from DGCA and Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority.

In a noteworthy achievement, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and IndiGo conducted a successful validation flight of the Required Navigation Process (RNP) Authorization Required procedure at Kathmandu Airport. The operation signifies a pivotal step in navigating airports with challenging terrain and environmental conditions.

The DGCA confirmed that the task was executed flawlessly by an IndiGo A320 aircraft. 'A successful Conduct of VNKT RNP Z RWY 02 (AR) Flight by IndiGo on A320 Aircraft VT-ISQ at Kathmandu marks the first validation flight of the RNP AR procedure by the regulator,' stated the DGCA. IndiGo accomplished its premier flight utilizing the advanced Required Navigation Performance with Authorization Required (RNP AR) approach on its A320 aircraft.

An all-women inspection team from the DGCA and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal oversaw the validation. The RNP AR approach offers enhanced safety through superior precision and a more stabilized pathway, reducing operational inefficiencies and lowering landing minima.

Pilots are mandated to undergo specialized simulator training to execute RNP AR approaches. Aircraft must also be suitably equipped for these advanced procedures. The successful validation of the RNP-AR methodology promises increased safety in complex environments, enhanced operational efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, lower carbon footprints, and financial savings through minimized crew and flight time losses.
