Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the central government has directed the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to issue Aadhaar cards to 935,682 individuals who provided their biometrics between February 2019 and August 2024. This decision aims to ease the lives of many who were previously ineligible due to NRC policies.

CM Sarma revealed that the state government had been working for two years to resolve this issue, forming a cabinet sub-committee and engaging in extensive discussions with various organizations and the central government. It was on August 27, 2024, that the directive was officially issued by the center to the UIDAI.

Additionally, Sarma confirmed that Champai Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a senior leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, will be joining the BJP on August 30. Sarma alleged that Soren had been followed by Jharkhand's Special Branch Police during his recent trips to Delhi, possibly having his phone tapped. The news was initially shared by Sarma on social media platform X.
