Security forces initiated a search operation on Saturday after a brief exchange of gunfire with terrorists in Sopore, Baramulla, according to police reports. The area has been sealed off and the search operation is currently underway, authorities confirmed.

The Jammu and Kashmir police announced via a post on social media platform 'X' that an exchange of fire occurred in Watergam, Sopore. The alert security personnel retaliated, leading to a cordon-off and ongoing searches. Further updates are awaited.

There has been a noticeable spike in terror activities over the past few months in the Jammu region, including incidents in Doda and Udhampur. This surge coincides with the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, set to take place in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1. The counting of votes is scheduled for October 4. There are 90 constituencies, with 74 general, nine reserved for Scheduled Tribes, and seven for Scheduled Castes.
