Seasoned bureaucrat and senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Govind Mohan assumed the role of new Union home secretary on Friday, succeeding Ajay Kumar Bhalla. Bhalla's five-year term concluded yesterday upon reaching the age of superannuation, with extended tenure of service.

Mohan, an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and IIM Ahmedabad, was previously the Union culture secretary before his latest appointment. A 1989 batch IAS officer from the Sikkim cadre, Mohan was designated Officer on Special Duty in the Union home ministry on August 14.

Highly regarded for his extensive experience in both the Sikkim and Central governments, Mohan replaces Ajay Bhalla, who received multiple extensions in his role since 2019. Mohan, who turns 59 next month, is noted for his diligence and is expected to bring his vast expertise to the new position.

Mohan served as Union Culture Secretary from October 2021 to August 2024 and has held key roles in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), including during the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally from Uttar Pradesh, he has been on Central Deputation since August 2017.

His experience also includes a stint at the Ministry of Finance, where he was involved in formulating key policies and managing foreign investments. With his new responsibility, Mohan's immediate challenge is to ensure smooth Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, working closely with the Election Commission.
