Landslide Destroys Sikkim's Teesta Stage 5 Power Station
A substantial landslide on Tuesday obliterated the 510 MW Teesta Stage 5 dam's power station in Sikkim's Balutar. Although the site was evacuated beforehand, workers captured the landslide on video. The dam had been undergoing reconstruction after an October 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood rendered it defunct.

A significant landslide on Tuesday morning demolished NHPC's 510 MW Teesta Stage 5 dam power station in Balutar, Sikkim. The hill adjacent to the station had been unstable for weeks.
The power station had been evacuated days ago, and no casualties were reported. Workers nearby managed to record the event on their phones. Notably, the Stage 5 dam had become defunct following the October 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) across the Teesta River Basin and was being reconstructed.
The landslide's impact underscores ongoing geological instability in the region and poses further challenges for infrastructure resilience in disaster-prone areas.
