Accusations Fly Over Alleged Ukrainian Attack Plans on Kursk Nuclear Plant
Russia has accused Ukraine of planning an attack on a nuclear plant in the Kursk region and claimed that Kyiv aims to blame the provocation on Moscow. Ukraine dismissed these accusations as 'insane' propaganda. The situation has heightened tensions, with both countries trading charges over nuclear plant security.
In a dramatic escalation, Russia accused Ukraine on Saturday of planning an assault on a nuclear plant in its Kursk region, claiming Kyiv was ready to blame the act on Moscow, according to Interfax news agency.
Kyiv dismissed the allegations as 'insane' propaganda. The accusations follow Ukraine's incursion into Russia's western Kursk region on August 6, aimed at shifting the dynamics of the ongoing conflict that began in 2022 with Moscow's invasion.
Russia's defense ministry has vowed a harsh response to any attacks on the Kursk power plant, asserting that a significant surrounding area could be contaminated. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi labeled Russia's claims as baseless.
