Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to inaugurate a state-of-the-art Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Chennai on Sunday. The high-profile event will also see the unveiling of two other key facilities: the regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC) in Chennai and the Coast Guard Air Enclave (CGAE) in Puducherry. Dignitaries from Union and State organizations are expected to attend, marking a major advancement in maritime safety and regional coordination.

The new MRCC in Chennai aims to significantly enhance the coordination and effectiveness of maritime rescue operations, particularly for distressed mariners and fishermen. This facility reflects the ICG's dedication to safeguarding lives at sea and ensuring swift responses in critical situations. The RMPRC at Chennai Port is poised to be a pioneering step in marine pollution management, addressing oil and chemical spills in the region.

The CGAE at Puducherry will bolster maritime security along the Puducherry and South Tamil Nadu coastlines. Equipped with Chetak and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Squadrons, the new air enclave aims to enhance aerial surveillance and response capabilities. These developments underscore India's commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection.

The Indian Coast Guard is tasked with executing and coordinating Search and Rescue (SAR) missions within the Indian Maritime Search and Rescue Region (ISRR), divided into three areas with MRCCs in Mumbai, Chennai, and Port Blair. Under the National Maritime SAR Coordinating Authority (NMSARCA), 36 Maritime Rescue Sub Centres operate under these MRCCs, deploying advanced ships and aircraft for SAR coverage. (ANI)
