Puducherry Assembly Speaker R Selvam announced on Saturday the construction of a state-of-the-art campus to house the territorial Assembly and Secretariat, with an estimated budget of Rs 576 crore.
The Lt Governor K Kailashnathan has approved the project, and the proposal has now been forwarded to the Union Home Ministry for further action. Selvam highlighted that the existing Assembly building, a relic from the French colonial era, is no longer sufficient to meet the growing demand for space, as it also accommodates offices for the Chief Ministers and other Ministers.
The new campus, to be located on a 15-acre site in Thattanchavady, had been delayed for almost five years due to pending approvals. With recent support from the current Lt Governor, the project is now set to proceed. Selvam expressed gratitude to Lt Governor Kailashnathan for his timely approval, which has allowed the project to move forward.
