Amid widespread protests in Kolkata, triggered by the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, junior doctors Rumalika Kumar and Riya Bera voiced their dissatisfaction at a press conference on Friday. They criticized the lack of progress in the investigation and demanded the immediate arrest of all involved, with substantial evidence to back the claims.

Kumar highlighted the issue of non-transparency, stating, "The investigation has been transferred from Kolkata police to the CBI, yet we see no progress even after 48 hours." Bera added, "We demand immediate arrests, an official press release from the CBI confirming the same, a written apology, and the resignation of higher authorities, including the former principal."

The duo also raised concerns over the controversial renovations at the Chest Medicine Department, calling for a thorough CBI investigation into all reported incidents, including the mob attack on August 14, 2024. Kumar reassured the public about the efficient operation of OPD and emergency services despite the protests, emphasizing the commitment of professors to patient care.

Nationwide protests erupted following the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9. Medical professionals and students across the country, including members of the Indian Medical Association and National Students' Union of India, staged candlelight marches and strikes to demand justice for the victim. The Indian Medical Association announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of services beginning Saturday, August 17, to further amplify the call for justice.
