RR Swain has been officially appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Swain will serve in this role until September 30, 2024, or until further notice.

The Ministry's order, dated August 6, highlighted the urgency of the appointment amid a rise in terror attacks across the Jammu region. Incidents include an attack on an army convoy in Kathua and multiple encounters in Doda and Udhampur. Swain had previously been handling the additional responsibilities of the DGP post.

In a related development, Indian Army troops in July thwarted an attack by the Pakistan Border Action Team (BAT) along the Line of Control in the Machchal sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district. One Pakistani intruder was killed, and one Indian Army soldier died in the incident, while four others, including a major-rank officer, were injured. The Ministry of Home Affairs reported that 28 people have been killed in 11 terror-related incidents up to July 21 this year.
