Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took part in a tree plantation drive in Lucknow on Saturday, underscoring the dire threat of global warming and the collective responsibility to mitigate its effects. He expressed strong support for the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day, urging everyone to plant a tree in honor of their mothers.

CM Yogi stressed that global warming is evolving into a severe crisis, potentially leading to water shortages and droughts, as evidenced by the recent erratic flood patterns in Uttar Pradesh. He recounted that the state experienced unexpected flooding in 24 districts, demonstrating the adverse impacts of climate change.

Highlighting the state's proactive measures, CM Yogi revealed that his administration has planted 168 crore trees since 2017, maintaining an 80 percent survival rate. Additionally, to curb carbon emissions, the government has replaced street lights with energy-efficient LEDs. Yogi also discussed urban development efforts in Lucknow, including anti-encroachment drives and housing schemes for rightful owners.

Prime Minister Modi had earlier set an ambitious target of planting 140 crore trees nationally under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. As part of this initiative, Madhya Pradesh aims to plant 5.5 crore trees under the leadership of CM Mohan Yadav.

On World Environment Day, June 5, PM Modi personally planted a Peepal tree sapling at Buddha Jayanti Park in Delhi, marking the commencement of the campaign. (ANI)
