Fire Erupts at Historic Rouen Cathedral

A fire broke out at the spire of Rouen Cathedral in France, with firefighters working to extinguish it. A fire broke out in the spire of Rouen Cathedral in northern France on Thursday, with firefighters working to control the blaze. Earlier TV footage showed a thick plume of dark smoke rising from the historic building.

Fire brigade chief Stephane Gouezec stated that firefighters arrived at the scene half an hour ago and are now ensuring the fire is completely extinguished. Approximately 70 firefighters and 40 fire engines are involved in the operation. The spire, located 120 meters above the ground, has been under renovation for several years and was surrounded by scaffolding.

Rouen Cathedral, a jewel of French medieval Gothic architecture, dates back to the 12th century and was immortalized by impressionist artist Claude Monet. Earlier TV footage showed people watching in horror as smoke billowed into the sky. The sight was reminiscent of the 2019 Notre-Dame Cathedral fire.

The local prefecture confirmed the cathedral had been evacuated, with no casualties reported. Emergency services are on the scene assessing the extent of the damage.
