Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address on Thursday, highlighted the growing public concern over natural disasters in recent years.
His remarks followed devastating landslides in Kerala's Wayanad on July 30, which claimed over 230 lives, as well as severe rains and flooding in several other states.
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day, Modi stated, ''This year and in recent years, we have all become increasingly concerned about natural disasters.'' He offered condolences to those who lost family members and property, assuring the nation stands with them.
Heavy monsoon rains and flooding across states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi have led to significant loss of life and property. Prior to the monsoon, India faced one of its harshest summers, recording 41,789 suspected heat stroke cases and 143 deaths, though heat waves are not officially considered national calamities.
