In a dramatic joint operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have arrested seven smugglers following four consecutive raids near the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Nadia district.

The collaborative effort took place in Seemanagar, along state highway no. 11, and led to the recovery of 16 gold bricks and a gold biscuit weighing 9.572 kg. Additionally, authorities seized cash amounting to Rs 11,58,500 and a Maruti Eco car used for transporting the gold. The total estimated market value of the confiscated gold is Rs 6,86,23,582.

According to the BSF, the DRI had tipped off the intelligence wing of the force on July 4 about potential gold smuggling activities. In response, a joint team from the BSF's 68 Battalion and DRI conducted meticulous vehicular checks on State Highway No. 11 in Simanagar. During the operation, which ran from 5:30 am to 9 am, two smugglers were apprehended with 4.8 kg of gold in a suspicious Maruti Eco car. Four additional smugglers carrying 4.82 kg of gold were later detained.

Subsequent information obtained during preliminary interrogations led to another raid in Ramnagar village of Karimpur, resulting in the arrest of one individual with a gold biscuit and Rs 11,58,500 in cash. The main smuggler, a resident of Teypur in Nadia, was among those arrested. Preliminary interrogation revealed his long-standing involvement in gold smuggling and plans to deliver the current consignment in Krishnanagar for Rs 3,000. The main smuggler had previously been apprehended by the BSF in 2022 with 16 gold biscuits.

The smugglers admitted to regularly transporting gold from the border area of Karimpur to unknown contacts at Dum Dum railway station, earning between Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 for their services. All the arrested individuals and the seized gold have been handed over to the DRI in Kolkata for further legal action.
