Protests Erupt in Kolkata Over Doctor's Tragic Death

Senior leaders led a rally in Kolkata protesting the rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor and the West Bengal government's alleged failure to ensure women's safety. The Left Front and Congress demanded resignations from key officials. Another procession by activists also faced police resistance.

Senior leaders from the Left Front and Congress held a rally in Kolkata condemning the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital last week. They criticized the West Bengal government for failing to ensure women's safety.

Leading the rally from Rashbehari Crossing to the Academy of Fine Arts, Left Front chairman Biman Bose accused 'TMC-sheltered goons' of vandalizing the hospital to shift focus from the demand for justice.

Bose and the rallyists called for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Kolkata Police commissioner for their alleged inability to prevent the crime and arrest the accused.

Simultaneously, a group of women and LGBT+ activists attempted to march to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital but were halted by police, leading to a commotion. Rights activist Satabdi Das, one of the organizers, stated that approximately 200 participants finally carried out the protest from College Street to Shyambazar, demanding strict punishment for the perpetrators.
