A Wi-Fi technician was taken into custody following accusations of sexual misconduct with a female student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), police reported on Friday.
The alleged incident took place in the student's hostel room on Thursday, prompting an overnight protest by NIT students. The students demanded immediate action and denounced what they termed 'victim shaming.' The protest subsided after the technician's arrest was confirmed by police, and an official issued an apology for the incident.
Trichy SP Varun Kumar stated that an investigation is underway to determine how the technician was allowed into the women's hostel, particularly where a security camera was not functioning. He emphasized that women's safety should be prioritized. Women police are now engaging with female students to check for similar past occurrences.
The accuser claimed that the technician entered her room on the pretext of repairing the Wi-Fi but then allegedly misbehaved with her.
The prompt response came after the affected student lodged a formal complaint, leading to the technician's swift arrest. Kumar reiterated the need for robust safety measures within the hostel premises.
