The Thane District Education Officer faced suspension on Friday for failing to report a sexual assault case in Badlapur in a timely manner. The BMC Education Officer also faced similar action for not installing CCTV cameras in civic schools across Mumbai.
State School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar announced the suspensions during a press conference at the BMC headquarters. He emphasized that this action sends a strong message that the government will not tolerate negligence.
Thane DEO Balasaheb Rakshe and BMC's Rajesh Kankal have been suspended. Rakshe was suspended for not reporting the Badlapur case quickly enough, while Kankal's suspension is due to delays in installing CCTV cameras in 123 BMC schools, a project still in progress after two years.
Officials revealed BMC plans to install 2,832 CCTV cameras in 123 schools, costing around Rs 18 crore. The assault incident led to protests, disrupting train services for over 10 hours on August 20.
