Several kindergartens in the Russian city of Belgorod, near the Ukraine border, will be closed for a week following a Kyiv attack on Monday that destroyed a child care facility, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced.

The incident also prompted several schools in the Kharkovskaya Gora district to move classes online, as the region's air defence units intercepted one Ukraine-launched drone overnight, according to the Russian defence ministry.

Belgorod and nearby districts have endured frequent shelling and other attacks from Ukrainian forces, who claim to target infrastructure key to Russia's war efforts. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the ongoing 30-month conflict initiated by Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
