The Congress on Friday criticized the rejected proposal to incorporate Manusmriti into Delhi University's LLB curriculum, calling it a 'trial balloon.'

Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh stated that the proposal was scrapped as it was deemed inappropriate, emphasizing the availability of other valid texts for teaching Indian culture.

Singh exercised his emergency powers to reject the proposal during a pre-screening of the agenda for the Academic Council meeting on Friday.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh reacted strongly, suggesting the move was part of a 'bad guy/good guy' routine by the RSS/BJP to float a trial balloon, which he insisted won't fool anyone.

The vice-chancellor clarified on Thursday that no such text would be taught after encountering objections from some teachers.

The proposed syllabus changes, which included readings from 'Manusmriti with the Manubhasya of Medhatithi' by G N Jha and 'Commentary of Manu Smriti - Smritichandrika' by T. Kristnasawmi Iyer, were rejected by a committee headed by Singh before reaching the Academic Council.
