The Congress on Thursday suggested that the government collect caste-wise data on the OBC population in the next Census by simply adding an extra column. Since 1951, every Census has included data on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

The opposition party contends such a move will fortify the foundation of affirmative action programs.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh shared a report on X from The Hindu, stating that the Union government is still deciding whether to conduct the next Census but is considering including caste enumeration.

Ramesh stressed the importance of conducting the overdue 2021 Census, citing its necessity for economic planning and social justice. He noted that over 12 crore Indians have been denied benefits under various schemes due to the delay.

Reports indicate the Union Government may conduct the postponed Census in the coming months.

Ramesh added that every Census since 1951 has collected caste-wise data on Scheduled Castes and Tribes, suggesting it would be seamless to add a column for OBC data. This, he believes, will meet the demand for a caste census and bolster affirmative action programs.

Under the Union List, entry number 69 in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, the responsibility to conduct a Census lies solely with the Union Government, Ramesh emphasized.

Congress has been advocating for a caste census alongside the routine data collection, asserting that it will pave the way for justice for SCs, STs, and OBCs.
