The Indian government is evaluating a scheme to formulate a 'Made in India' label to promote Brand India globally, according to an official statement.

A high-level committee is scrutinizing the details of this scheme. The aim is to create a strong brand identity for India, akin to 'Made in Japan' or 'Made in Switzerland'.

Experts highlight that quality consciousness is essential for this initiative, with a focus initially on sectors such as textiles where India has a significant advantage. The India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), a trust under the Department of Commerce, is already working on promoting the 'Made in India' label overseas.

According to Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), India's branding strategy should prioritize high-quality products, improve substandard ones, and consistently uphold product reliability. The Indian pharmaceutical sector's global reputation for high-quality generic drugs is cited as an example. The GTRI suggests creating a unified brand 'India Quality Product' to signal excellence and reliability.

This initiative could start with garments, shoes, and handicrafts, and eventually extend to electronics and engineering products.
