A 63-year-old man died and four people were injured after their autorickshaw was hit by a luxury car in central Delhi's Tilak Marg, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 5 am on September 12 at the intersection of Sikandra and Mathura Roads when a BMW car jumped a traffic light and collided with the autorickshaw, causing it to topple, authorities reported.
Neeraj Kumar, his father Sachhidanada, wife Kumari Salma, and two sons, Yashraj and Hansraj, were returning home from New Delhi Railway Station in the autorickshaw. The impact of the crash left all family members injured, but the driver escaped unhurt and alerted law enforcement, a police officer indicated.
Sachidanad and his grandson Yashraj sustained critical injuries and were transported to LNJP hospital, where Sachidanad succumbed to his injuries on Friday, the officer confirmed.
The driver of the BMW, which has a Himachal Pradesh registration number, has been identified and is expected to be arrested soon, the officer assured.
A case under section 281 (rash driving) and 125(a) (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the BNS has been registered at Tilak Marg Police Station, and further investigations are underway, police said.
