Northern States Set to Discuss Labour Reforms and Employment Generation

A high-level regional meeting involving the northern States and Union Territories, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Rajasthan, and Chandigarh, is set to discuss crucial issues related to labour reforms and employment generation on September 6 in Chandigarh. The meeting will be chaired by Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje.
Organized by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, the session will see the participation of Secretary of Labour and Employment, Sumita Dawra, along with senior officials from both central and state/UT governments. This is part of a series of nationwide consultations initiated by the Ministry. The inaugural regional meeting took place in Bengaluru on August 30, with representation from southern states and UTs, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Puducherry, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
A range of essential topics will be discussed, including the harmonization of draft rules under the Labour Codes, the role of the e-Shram portal as a 'One-Stop Solution' for social protection for unorganized workers, expanding the coverage of Central welfare schemes for Building and Other Construction Workers (BoCW), collaborations with educational institutions for job creation, employment metrics, and the National Career Service (NCS).
