In a significant development for India's financial landscape, the total number of registered investors in the Indian stock markets surpassed the 10 crore mark in August, as per a National Stock Exchange (NSE) report. This milestone highlights the escalating interest and engagement of the Indian populace in equity markets.

The report revealed that it took merely five months for investor numbers to jump from 9 crore to 10 crore, showcasing a brisk influx of new market participants. The contributing factors for this surge include heightened digitisation, increased investor awareness, and improved market accessibility.

Robust stock market returns, particularly post-pandemic, have further enticed new investors. The report states, "A combination of increased digitisation, better investor awareness, enhanced market access, and superior performance compared to other asset classes has driven this participation surge since the pandemic."

Moreover, the report provided historical context, noting the pace at which the market achieved its first crore of investors compared to recent years. While it initially took over 25 years, subsequent milestones have been reached faster, prominently due to a younger demographic aged 20-30 joining the market.

This rapid growth signifies a broader trend of financial inclusion and shifting investment preferences among India's youth, who are increasingly opting for equities for wealth creation. The stock markets, traditionally seen as exclusive to the financial elite, are now drawing a diverse, younger audience driven by the prospect of high returns and the ease of digital platforms.
