Aiden Markram has been appointed captain of the South African cricket team for the upcoming test against Bangladesh, as announced by Cricket South Africa on Friday. This change comes after scans revealed that current captain Temba Bavuma, 34, sustained a left tricep muscle strain.

Bavuma's injury, which was suffered during the One Day International series against Ireland in the UAE, has ruled him out of South Africa's first test against Bangladesh. Despite this setback, he will travel with the team to Dhaka for continued recovery ahead of the second test.

The first test in Dhaka, starting October 21, sees Markram taking up the captaincy for the first time, with Dewald Brevis joining the squad. Meanwhile, Lungi Ngidi is set to replace Nandre Burger, who is suffering from a lumbar stress fracture.
