One of the most decorated all-rounders in cricket history, Shakib Al Hasan has marked Bangladesh's Test against South Africa in Mirpur as his farewell match in the red-ball format. The tentative Proteas series in October awaits security clearance from Cricket South Africa, ESPNcricinfo reported.

This announcement follows the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as Bangladesh's Prime Minister on August 5, amid student-led protests. Shakib, who was playing in the Global T20 League in Canada, visited Pakistan for a two-match Test series after the tournament. Post Bangladesh's historic victory over Pakistan, he joined the ongoing tour in India.

Shakib expressed his retirement intentions to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). "I am available for the South Africa series, but due to ongoing issues back home, my plans are uncertain," said Shakib at a press conference ahead of the second Test against India in Kanpur.

He added, "I've informed [BCB president] Faruque bhai and selectors. If possible, my last Test will be in Mirpur. The board is ensuring my safety and smooth departure from Bangladesh. My primary concern is my security." Earlier, BCB's Shahriar Nafees confirmed Shakib would not be "harassed unfairly" when he returns following the Awami League government's fall.

Shakib has been among 147 people named in a murder case in Dhaka. The law adviser, Asif Nazrul, expressed hope Shakib won't be arrested. "Only a case is filed against Shakib. I trust he won't be detained," Asif stated. (ANI)
