Star New Zealand cricketer Kane Williamson will be absent from the opening Test against India in Bengaluru, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. The 34-year-old is recovering from a groin strain sustained during the recent Sri Lanka series, making him unavailable for the crucial match.

Williamson's injury presents a significant challenge for the Kiwis against India in the Test series. He suffered a groin discomfort during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, necessitating an extended rehabilitation at home before traveling to India. In his absence, the team has added Mark Chapman to the lineup for the India tour. Following Tim Southee's resignation as captain after a 2-0 defeat in Sri Lanka, Tom Latham will lead the New Zealand side against India in the upcoming three-match series.

New Zealand selector Sam Wells expressed hope that Williamson will recover for the later stages of the Test series. "We've been advised that Kane should rest and rehabilitate now to avoid worsening the injury. We are optimistic that his rehabilitation will proceed as planned, allowing him to rejoin the tour later. While it's disappointing to be without Kane initially, this opens up a role for another player in a key series," Wells told ESPNcricinfo.

In his Test career, Williamson has participated in 102 matches and 180 innings, amassing 8,881 runs with a strike rate of 51.43 and an average of 54.48. The 34-year-old debuted in Test cricket in 2010 against India. The New Zealand squad for the series includes Tom Latham (C), Tom Blundell (WK), Michael Bracewell (1st Test only), Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Will O'Rourke, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Ish Sodhi (2nd and 3rd Test only), Tim Southee, Kane Williamson, and Will Young.
