Pogacar's decisive move came with 100km of the 273km ride left, securing the rainbow jersey to add to his Giro d'Italia and Tour de France victories this year.
The 26-year-old cruised the last 500 meters with arms raised as he celebrated becoming the first Slovenian to win the world title on the road. The silver medal chase saw Australian Ben O'Connor emerge from a high-quality pursuit group to secure second place on the podium.
Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel, the reigning champion who claimed the title last year in Glasgow, took home the bronze medal.
