Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged with misconduct by the English Football Association (FA). This action comes three months after Bentancur made an offensive comment about South Koreans on a Uruguayan television show in June, specifically targeting his Tottenham teammate, Son Heung-min.
In the televised appearance, Bentancur was asked about acquiring a Tottenham jersey and quipped, "Sonny's? It could be Son's cousin, too, because more or less they are all the same." Following backlash, Bentancur took to Instagram to apologize, calling it a "very bad joke" and assuring that he meant no disrespect towards Son or any harm.
The FA alleges that Bentancur acted in an improper manner with abusive and insulting words, constituting an aggravated breach involving references to nationality, race, or ethnic origin. Bentancur has until September 19 to respond but remains eligible to play in the meantime.
