India's Simran Sharma, the reigning world champion, advanced to the final of the women's 200m T12 race at the Paralympic Games with an impressive time of 25.03 seconds on Friday.
Simran had previously topped her heat, progressing to the semifinals with a time of 25.41 seconds. She competed in the same heat as Germany's Katrin Mueller-Rottgardt, who narrowly beat her to a bronze medal in the 100m final earlier.
Born prematurely with visual impairment, Simran's journey to this point has been fraught with challenges, including the chronic illness and subsequent death of her father. These adversities fueled her determination to overcome obstacles and excel in her sport. The T12 classification at the Paralympics is designated for athletes with visual impairments, and Simran's breakthrough came at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championship. Despite her father's passing shortly after, she has remained resolute, channeling her grief into motivation to honor his memory through her achievements.
