Adrian Newey Joins Aston Martin: A New Chapter in Formula One

Adrian Newey, Formula One's star designer, is poised to join Aston Martin in 2025, with the team expected to confirm the move next week.

Aston Martin has extended an invitation to the media for a press conference scheduled next Tuesday at their Silverstone factory, where sources indicate Newey's appointment will be announced. Eddie Jordan, who manages Newey and founded the team that eventually became Aston Martin, declined to comment, as did a team spokesman.

Newey, 65, had announced his departure from champions Red Bull in May, seeking new challenges. His designs have garnered 25 drivers' and constructors' championships for Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull. Notably, his 2023 Red Bull car was the most dominant in the sport's history with 21 wins from 22 races.

Although Red Bull currently leads both championships, a recent dip in performance has seen McLaren close the gap to just eight points. Aston Martin, Ferrari, and McLaren had all shown interest in acquiring Newey, particularly with a new engine era and major rules revamp coming in 2026.

The Daily Mail reported that Newey's deal would bring him 20 million pounds ($26.29 million) annually. Owned by Canadian Lawrence Stroll, the team boasts 43-year-old double world champion Fernando Alonso and Stroll's son Lance as drivers, along with ambitious plans to reach the summit of Formula One.

Newey expressed regret last year at never having worked with Alonso. Stroll has heavily invested in the team, expanding their factory into a new campus and recruiting top talent from rivals. Recently, former Mercedes engine head Andy Cowell was named CEO, replacing ex-McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh. The team also signed former Ferrari technical director Enrico Cardile. Aston Martin, currently fifth in the standings, are set to start an exclusive new partnership with Honda, Red Bull's current engine suppliers, beginning in 2026.
