The City of Cape Town is set to roll out an expanded free park and ride service on Saturday, 7 September 2024, in anticipation of the highly anticipated Castle Lager Rugby Championship match between the Springboks and New Zealand at DHL Stadium.

With a sold-out crowd expected for the 5pm kick-off, this will be the Springboks' first appearance in Cape Town since their victory against Wales in 2022. It also marks the first time the Springboks will face the All Blacks in Cape Town since 2017.

“Cape Town is united in pride and excitement as we prepare to host our world champion Bokke for this historic clash against our greatest rivals. To support this major event, we are pleased to announce an expanded and free MyCiTi shuttle service for spectators,” said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

The free shuttle service will cover fans from multiple locations, including Century City, the University of Cape Town (UCT), Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), Thibault Square, and Civic Centre stations. Stadium gates will open at 12:30pm, with the curtain raiser match between the Springbok Women and the Barbarian Women starting at 1:30pm. The first shuttle from all pick-up points will depart at 12pm.

Additionally, the Civic Centre will offer 475 parking bays for ticketed rugby fans on a first-come, first-served basis from 11am. These free parking areas are accessible from Hertzog Boulevard and Civic Road.

The shuttle service from UCT’s Upper Campus and Century City Steelbridge E-Parking will operate until 4:45pm to ensure that all spectators arrive before the 5pm kick-off. At UCT, parking is available on the Upper Campus, with shuttle services available at the UCT Shuttle North Stop. Century City Steelbridge E-Parking will offer 500 free parking bays, monitored by security but at the owner’s risk.

Free on-street parking in the CBD will be available from 1pm. The last return bus from the stadium to the pick-up points will leave at 9:30pm.

“With the game sold out, we anticipate road congestion on match day. To alleviate traffic, we encourage spectators to use the park and ride system,” said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

Smith also warned that parking around the stadium is limited and advised against illegal parking in residential areas. Vehicles parked illegally may be fined or towed. Safety and security personnel will be deployed to work with SAPS to ensure the event runs smoothly.

A dedicated e-hailing area will be established on P13 on Greenpoint Main Road between York Road and Wigtown Road. Residents and motorists are advised of road closures and restrictions on match day.
