Defending champion Coco Gauff became the latest big-name casualty to exit the U.S. Open when Emma Navarro won their fourth-round match 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. This marked Navarro's second Grand Slam victory over her stunned American compatriot this year.
Gauff had sought to avenge her earlier defeat by Navarro at Wimbledon, where she also lost in the fourth round. However, Navarro delivered an aggressive and dominant performance at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Gauff struggled significantly with her serve, recording 19 double faults and 60 unforced errors.
Navarro's victory propelled her to her second Grand Slam quarter-final, where she will face Spain's Paula Badosa. Gauff's defeat means she will drop out of the top five in the global rankings. Navarro expressed her amazement at reaching the quarter-finals, given her previous early exits in the tournament.
