Grigor Dimitrov stunned sixth seed Andrey Rublev to advance to the U.S. Open quarter-finals for the first time since 2019, clinching a dramatic 6-3 7-6(3) 1-6 3-6 6-3 victory on Sunday.
Dimitrov dominated with his serve, winning 80% of his first-serve points and landing 17 aces. Rublev, visibly frustrated, ended up injuring his wrist after slamming his racket. The intense match finally swayed in Dimitrov's favor in the fifth set, much to the delight of spectators, including Serena Williams.
The contentious clash saw Rublev breaking down early with double faults and unforced errors, allowing Dimitrov to capitalize. Despite Rublev's mid-match resurgence, Dimitrov held his nerve, securing a decisive break in the final set.
