Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen overcame early serving woes to secure a victory in the second round of the U.S. Open, defeating American wildcard Amanda Anisimova with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win on Monday.

Seventh seed Zheng, who reached the quarter-finals in New York last year, excelled in her first-serve points and converted six out of eleven break-point opportunities in a grueling two hour 20-minute match at Louis Armstrong Stadium, despite being broken four times. 'At the beginning I didn't have my first serve, but as the match progressed, I found my rhythm on the hard court,' Zheng said during her on-court interview.

Anisimova initially dominated by taking a 5-1 double break lead in the first set but faced fierce competition as Zheng broke back. Anisimova, despite twice failing to serve out the set, clinched the first frame by breaking Zheng a third time. Zheng gained momentum in the second set, hitting four aces and breaking Anisimova to even the match. Zheng then took control in the final set, securing a 3-0 double break lead. Anisimova, struggling with discomfort, couldn't bounce back. Zheng now prepares to face Russia's Erika Andreeva.
