Alexander Zverev, seeded fourth, out-dueled fellow German Maximilian Marterer 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the U.S. Open on Monday.

Zverev impressed with 21 aces and a 79% first-serve win rate at the Grandstand. Though unseeded Marterer, who entered as a 'lucky loser' after Emil Ruusuvuori's withdrawal, managed to clinch a tight second set, he was ultimately outmatched by the world's No. 4 player.

Zverev showcased his sharp play early, breaking Marterer's serve in the opening game, but faced moments of frustration, notably tossing his racket after one of 44 unforced errors in the third set. This victory propels Zverev to a second-round showdown with the winner of the match between Frenchman Alexandre Muller and Australia's Adam Walton.
