In the wake of former England cricketer Graham Thorpe's death, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has opened up about his own struggle with depression in 2011.

Thorpe, who passed away at age 55 after a prolonged illness, has brought to light the mental health struggles many athletes face.

'I recently heard about Graham Thorpe and we have heard about multiple cricketers who have ended their lives because of depression,' Uthappa shared on his YouTube channel. He recalled his own battle with depression, describing it as a 'debilitating, exhausting, and heavy' experience.

Uthappa spoke candidly, discussing the feelings of worthlessness and being a burden to loved ones that plagued him. He explained, 'Every step feels heavier and heavier. Every step you take, it feels like more is being added on to you. And just feel immobile.'

Uthappa recalled 2011 as a particularly dark time, filled with shame and an inability to even look at himself in the mirror. He stated, 'I know how burdensome my existence had become. I know how far away from being purposeful in life.'

Thorpe, who debuted internationally in 1993, was a mainstay in English cricket throughout the late 90s and early 2000s. He played 100 Tests, scoring 6744 runs, and was known for his gritty batting.

After retiring in 2005, Thorpe took on coaching roles with New South Wales, Surrey, and the England Men's team. His coaching acumen contributed to England's 2019 World Cup win.

Most recently, Thorpe was the assistant coach for England's Ashes tour in 2021/22. He was set to become Afghanistan's head coach in March 2022 but had to step down due to his illness.
