A third-year Computer Science student at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) was discovered dead in his hostel room on Monday, according to police reports.

The deceased, a male student from Uttar Pradesh, was found in his room at the Brahmaputra Hostel. The police have initiated an investigation, and the body has been sent for a postmortem examination.

This unfortunate incident marks the fourth student death at IITG this year. On August 9, a female student was reportedly found hanging in her room. The news of the recent death prompted students to gather in front of the administration building, demanding justice for the deceased and better mental health support.

"The student had been struggling with physical health issues and mental disturbances, affecting his academic performance," claimed one of the protesting students.

Protesters allege that although he had submitted the necessary medical certificates, they were ignored, exacerbating his depression. The dean of students' welfare met with the agitated students, assuring them that their well-being is the institute's top priority.

A spokesperson from IITG stated, "We are deeply saddened to report the loss of a student from our community. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the student's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time."

The institute reaffirmed its commitment to providing support and resources to help students navigate their challenges, emphasizing the importance of mental health and student safety during these trying times.
