Women's T20 World Cup Relocated to UAE Amid Bangladesh Turmoil
The Women's T20 World Cup, initially set for October in Bangladesh, has been relocated to the UAE due to political unrest. Travel advisories from several participating nations prompted the ICC to make the move. Despite the change, Bangladesh retains future hosting rights.
The Women's T20 World Cup scheduled for October has been moved to the United Arab Emirates from Bangladesh, which has been rocked by political turmoil and violence in recent weeks. World cricket's governing body, the ICC, announced on Tuesday that travel advisories from several participating countries were a key factor in the decision.
Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country earlier this month amid ongoing protests, and an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has taken charge. "It is a shame not to be hosting the Women's T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board would have staged a memorable event," ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said.
"Travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams made hosting the event in Bangladesh unfeasible. However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to bringing an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future," he added. The Women's T20 World Cup, scheduled for Oct. 3 to 20, will be the ninth edition, involving 10 countries.
